Cabelas and others, sell "fish grippers" that grip the fish's mouth, allowing control for hook removal, even for lifting fish out of the water. Supposed to be good for catch/release.

This looks like a harsh way to handle a fish, especially one you want to let go. Seems like it could do a lot of tissue damage in no time.

Anyone own and use one of these?

i haven't used one, but from the few fishing programs i've seen, it appears to be better to handle the fish with - no removal of the important 'slime' that sticks to your hands... just a thought

I have a bright orange plastic one I bought from Wallmart for the wife to use when we all have fish on and can not stop and take her fish off until get our fish in. I think it would work very good but she has never used it. Instead she just waits or shakes the fish off.

Re: Anyone use a fish "gripper"?

Yes, I am married. Actually, I had trouble with my login name "Barely_Legal" and changed it yesterday which explains the single post. Besides, the only thing barely legal about me anymore is my fish.

Crab Bait, I have looked all over for the less expensive alternative to that $60-70 Fish Gripper and can't find it. It's a great idea and I want one.

Also, I have had a treble hook embedded in my skin before, in my nose (never stand behind someone who is casting). I had to go to the hospital to get it out. It was a Bass Buster lure. The most embarrassing part was the ride to the hospital and the long wait in the ER. I guess its not everyday a girl comes in with a lure hanging from her nose.

They are great for toothy critters, Bluefish especially. They have great vision and will snap at you even once they are landed and in the boat.

Re: Anyone use a fish "gripper"?

Thanks for the info CB! I have three sisters, all married. I guess you missed the boat.

Also, do most of you carry mini-bolt cutters on board for aiding the removal of fish hooks from the skin?
Is the best way to remove a hook but cutting the ring end and pushing it out that way? I've seen small trebles completely embedding in somones leg before. They were lucky enough to be close to land, but thats not always the case.

Re: Anyone use a fish "gripper"?

Well, from bitter experience I can tell you that if it's buried deep in muscle you aren't going to push it through. I tried and couldn't get it to go. The ER doctor tried the same and destroyed two needle pushers in the process. finally pushed an 18 gauge needle in behind it and covered the barb and pulled it out. $137.50.
