I know what you are thinking and this is not that ;)

Cabelas sell them. It looks like a rod tip and 8" fishing rod, shoved into a plastic base.

You take a cleaned salmon or trout (salmonoids), start feeding the spine into the ring (rod tip) and start shoving downward. Supposed to pull out the spine and connected bones.

It carries the "As seen on TV" seal of approval, so it has to work "Wunderful", right?

Marty

Hmmm.

That "seen on TV" bit often means it is a piece of crap.

It doesn't seem to me that removing the spine is going to do any noticable good, anyway.

A good, sharp, 9" Rapala filet knife and a little practice can turn a big salmonoid into boneless filets and a skeleton pretty quick.

I will be interested to see what our Northwestern neighbors have to say.

I saw the ads, but never used it. There is a fish skinner out there too, but a good fillet knife is all you need.

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

I have been considering trying to make or buy one as the trout I catch and keep in the mountains are usually not much bigger than 12". I have found it harder to bone/fillet them than I do small panfish because to me trout are not as tough and the bones tend to feel just like meat when I run the knife in. It looks like it takes out the back and ribs which would make serving them up the way I do much easier.

Took a look at one at the Cabelas store (even showed a "how to" video, which made it look easy).

The instructions clearly state that the fish should be dead for at least 6 hours, or thawed from frozen. Max fish wt. 3 lbs.

Seemed like too much of a hassle.

No sale.

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

6hrs I guess I will hold off on the shadying (to borrow the phrase). I like my trout fresh from the river and for the most part still quivering when I start the process but usually they have only been deceased about an hour or two. I only get them when I am camping and can get them almost from my usual camsite if not just a short walk down or up river.

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

This could be another thread, but what's the best way to cook 10-14" trout?

I seem to tear them up pretty good, if I try to filet them.

Can you cook them and remove bones prior to eating?

You can tell I do more fishing than catching ;)

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

A 10 to 14" trout should be cooked skin on and
bones in, no need to fillet. Just make sure its
cleaned properly remove the tail and fins if you
like. And cook away.

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

You guys are right: a good fillet knife is all one needs for salmon. I use the cheap Rapelas, because their blades are flexible, and will slide along the ribs very nicely. I also have dedicated needle nose pliers in my kitchen drawer. I use them to pull those single bones in the first 1/3 of the carcass (don't know how to describe them, but if you've eaten a salmon fillet, you know what I mean).
Now....how would this thing work for shad? I'd love to figure out a way to de-bone them! But even that's too complicated for 21st century science..... :(

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

I just field dress trout and cookem whole too. i use a fork to stick down vertically with the backbone, and split the fish in two, lengthwise. then use fork to lift the backbone up/out of fish. but then i'm talking about a 1/2 lb trout.

-i caught a 2 lb shad a few yrs ago. those things can fight. i think they're the freshwater tarpon. lol

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

I have a debonner which is home made. It is made from a 1/2" copper tubing with a grooved slot on one end about 24" long. If you know a plumber ask him for a piece. Iuse it to debone bait fish and make up trolling rigs. When deboned the tail section gives a side to side motion as is the fish is alive :)

flyrod

Do you use it in a similar fashion as the Wunder boner, where you shove the fish over it with the spine and bones inside?

If so, does it work on freshly caught fish?

Marty

Re: Anyone have a Wunder Boner?

I know nothing about the wonderbonner. The copper tubing takes out the center heavy bone. It does leave the finer bones. I use it for rigging & trolling baits such as mackeral for stripers when the live mackeral are gone. Also use it for blue fish for tuna fishing. The baits wiggle better with out the back bone.To answer your question; I believe it works in a simular fashion.
