I am looking for a boat mentor in the Delmarva area. I am brand new, have taken safety courses, but would enjoy learning about handling and maintenance from someone who has the time and inclination. My boat is moored at Bay Colony off Rte 26 near Holts Landing, on the Indian River Bay. It's a new 19' Hurricane deckboat, Sundeck 187, and I am trying to learn all I can.
Life is so short. Any kind souls out there who could spare a few hours once or twice a month?
Mary

Mare.
I too would be happy to help. It's just that you're some 10 hours away - by plane !

How much reading have you done? I think there is a lot good (small) books and leaflets about most issues. You sound smart so I'm sure you will manage.

I've got the original 'Owners Packet' from my SeaRay w/ Mercury and that contains a 40 page booklet called 'You and your boat' by NMMA. It has a lotta general hints. If you like I'll scan it and mail it or place it somewhere for you to download - or if you're not into heavy file attachments I'll send it to you by ordinairy mail. If you want to leave your address for this, use this never.send@mail.com to avoid putting your address out in public on the board.

UU
I'm reading everything I can get my hands on. Boat Docking by Low. Chapmans, Boating 101, Boating for Idiots... I'm also watching a couple videos a bit at a time, but they have a guy as the operator who makes it look ridiculously easy.
Unfortunately, my new boat came with a gen operators manual, but NOTHING that was specific to my boat, or my engine... DUH? And I confess very techical manuals go over my head. I do better when I can watch and learn. But I appreciate the offer. I might have better luck downloading from work, with their T1 line, than here at home. I'll also try the email link you mentioned.
Mare

Check your mail. I answered that before going to this board.

Do not be scared of a video telling it's a piece of cake.. it really is! You'll get the hang of it in no time. Just be cautious at the beginning.

Think ahead, imagine what's gonna happen and youl'll be fine right away.

When you read stuff, notice that the same task may be described in more books - get the essentials out of it and you'll be fit for fight.

Thanks. I cant wait to get to the water this coming weekend. Friday and Monday off, so if the weather cooperates, should get some good practice.

I would like to help you but I am new at this too. But I will give you the same advise that was given to me. Only take your boat out during the week, thats the best time to practice because it's less traffic on the water. On Saturday and Sunday there are alot of weekenders and from watching them come and go with there boats they know less then me, and I know very little. I wouldn't be cought dead out there on the weekends.
It's to dangerous! I preferre to sit and watch.
Good Luck
Ken

Practice, patience, and humility. Don't be shy about asking boaters at your marina for advice. Best other advice in general is (Boats don't have breaks)
