A half dozen Serpas.

A boat that size is not a carry boat, beyond about forty feet and that's just "boat".

My 16.5 Aluminum V, with deck, seats, ect. weighs about 800 pounds.

Marty

Nothing would make me pack that boat in anywhere. If I had to carry a boat in, it would be a 13' canoe, 1 paddle, 1 rod, net, and very small tacklebox.

If I was to "pack it in" and get off the water, 20 degree temps would do it. Also, 2' chop, a bad sunburn, a skinny gal with a skinnier bikini.

Need to know a lot more about the boat. Open bow or Closed bow, Windshield, Top, Depth of boat, width of boat, Height of Transom. Is it fiberglass or aluminum?

I don't know unless I was there. One of my infinite number of brother-in-laws was fishing with his Dad and my nephew. They were on a lake in Ontario when a storm blew up. This lake is ones of those that the get big waves real fast. The waves were spilling water over the front of the boat and the rain was coming down so hard it was helping to fill the boat. As other boats were pulling into the islands, they tried to make it to shore. Halfway there, they thought they were going to sink. They actually took off their life preservers and wrapped them all around my nephew so he would survive if they went down. They thought at least 1 generation should survive. They all made it but leanred a valuable lesson that day.

Lightning!...in any boat, no matter what the size. I grew up in a hardcore Walleye fishing family from the iron range of Northeren Minnesota that was religious about fishing 'weather', bad weather, and did this stuff unconsciously. 14'-18' Lund tillers were our pews and mother nature our tabernacle. I can recall blue bird days where the lakes were glass and our limits quickly filled but my grandfather, father and, uncles would still comment how much better the fishing would've been if the skys were dark and the water had a 'good chop'!?!? So weather patterns usually storm fronts were looked upon as a blessing. But as soon as lightning was spotted-off the water we went. I've been nervous a few times but luckily returned to the cabin in one piece. A few years ago on a trip my father in-law said to me (while loosing his lunch), "You're nuts! You can buy this S#!t at the store!". I don't think he understands.

I agree with Barlow that about all that would make me pack it in is lightning (if by myself or with good friends).

However, the usual reason I need to pick up and go is:

1. The better half says it is too hot.
2. The better half says it is too cold.
3. The better half needs to use the restroom.
4. The better half says we have had enough fun.
5. The son gets bored.
6. The two year old daughter starts crying because I won't let her drive.
7. I am tired of baiting and untangling everyone else's rod and reels (never happens when with good friends).
8. The better half (a lawyer) starts analyzing and doubting the swamped capacity of the boat (a Whaler).
9. When anyone decides they want to swim and not fish (can happen with good friends).
10. When I limit out.

WP

When, having fished alone all morning, everybody else anchors within 20' of you cause they think you must be onto something!!!
Ross

To be honest I own a 5m boat and it's not the big waves that give me the jitters, it's the short choppy ones, they can ruin an otherwise enjoyable day quicker than a sick dog.
Especially when the wind is against the tide. The boat doesn't want to be pounded to death so we either trail a larger boat home or just come in at 10 knots like a launch.
Ross

When waves in the lake start to whitecap it is time to get off the water. Lightening is about the only other thing that would get me off the water if I was not ready to go. I can think of many other reasons to leave but if fishing alone only these two will MAKE me leave.

My boat will take the waves and wind [within reason, of course], but I can't take the lightning. It will send me running every time.

Windy is one thing, an approaching storm is another. I usually leave when it gets too windy, because of harder fishing. I purchased downriggers this year, so I'll see how they do in the strong winds.

It is important to know the weather forecast, but more important to keep "an eye on the sky", especially in a small boat.

If storm clouds are building, it's time to get off the the lake (if anything, to avoid the boat load lines), or at least closer to shore.

It would not be worth the risk to "ride out" a storm in a small boat.
