I recently read an article on how pro bass and walleye fisherman scout areas prior to a tournament, using an underwater drop camera system. If they find a nice fish, they will drop a marker, to come back to.

I was looking a some camera models at Cabelas and they really seem to have good quality units (Aqua Vu). Since you can now get a good setup for $300, this could possible qualify them as a "maybe have" toy.

If you don't look for fish, they could be cool to look for whatever else is down there.

BTW, I did get the "that's too frivilous" feeling and passed on the purchase. I would like to build my own.

Marty

I think they would be really neat just to see what was really down there, not necessarily the fish either... For me, I think once the novilty wears off it's probably going to get left at home...

A mask and snorkel are alot cheaper, and more fun if you ask me...

Cool gadgets! My brother brought his Aqua-view up ice fishing so I was able to get some hands on with the unit. I don't know about paying the money for the unit but we'll find out this spring on Lake Michigan if it's a must have or just another expensive piece of equipment to distract me or sit on the shelf in the basement. If money is no object by all means get one.

My mom talked my dad into getting one, at least thats his story.

It sits in the box, at home. His complaints:

The boat has to be very very still or the camera moves around too much to see anything. Also will not work in a river for the same reason.

Also, it is hard to tell which way the camera is pointing after you lower it down.

Its way too dark down there to see much, the sunlight just doesn't penetrate deep enough, especially in stained or sediment layden water.

They did get to look at some nice sand in some crystal clear water one sunny day.

Oh wait. Forget what I just said.

Hey, my dad has an Auqa Vu. He likes it alot and uses it every week. But he really needs to sell it so he can pay for his new teeth. Does anyone want to rent it? :)

I bought an aqu-view last year for a canada trip and was sorely dissapointed. Any color to the water at all, and you see squat (as in diddly). Here in Wisconsin, it's especially useless as we hace a lot of tannin and algae bloom in our water. The only exception was in a small springfed deep lake that I know. That's the only place where it earned it's keep.
