I installed a Teleflex Tach on My 1980 Mariner 60hp (Model 60EL , Sn 675L305318 outboard, actually commonly known as a Japanese Mariner built by Yamaha). The destructions that came with it said it would work ona Mariner 18, 25, 48, 60 HP through 1983. and gave the settings. I hooked it up and it works (well kinda). The idle seem correct, the voltage at 2000 rpms seems correct but it max's out at 4000 rpms. Now I know the motor is turning more than that(so now I read the fine print)> It says that : some 30 & 40 HP 2 cylinder motors non-USA built motors(which mine falls into 2 of the 3 catogories) may require a module ( Mercury P/N 17461A2) when using any of these tachs. Anyone in the world know how to make this tach work correctly. Have already tested rectifier, it tested good and Teleflex has yet to respond to my email. I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP PLEEEEEEEASE.

There's an alternative. It's called "Tinytach". Cost about forty skins and is a little larger then a Zippo. You could use it 'till Teleflex gets back to ya. Here's the link. Give 'um a call and tell 'um what engine you have and he'<br />ll have it to you in a week or less. They're super-nice people.<br /><br /> Tinytach <br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

I purchased a tachometer from ENM company. www.enmco.com. It can be used on 2 cycles or 4 cycles and has a hourmeter, model number PT14. Works great on my Mercury 40hp, 4cylinder. You just have to wrap one wire around one spark plug wire and hook up a ground wire. They cost about $50. Finally found out that my prop is the wrong size!<br /><br />Tom

Here is the scoop as I have figured outwith my own little pea brain: The Japanese built Mariners apparently have a lighting coil, magneto ignition system. The tachs that you buy require a alterntor and will not work correctly on the lighting coil ignition. Now mercury sells a tach (P/N 79-43984A 1)that Fits Mariner 8 to 40 hp (Japanese built) manual start outboards with lighting coil and Mariner 9.9 to 60 (Japanese built) electric start outboards. They are only $267.60 each. Or they sell the Tachometer Module Assembly(P/N 17461A2) for $9.25 that adapts all Quicksilver tachometers, except 79-43984A 1, for use with Japanese built outboards. Now my thoughts are if it works with the Mercury tack , it will probably work with the Teleflex. GO FIGURE. Iordered the module today and it will be here on Monday. Will Let you all know if it works on Monday

Responding to this old posting of yours. Did you ever get your tach to work with the module you ordered?
