Lets start with,Im going to use automotive Urethane paint. I dont care about your feelings on auto vs gel. Im going to use Urethane Auto Paint. This will be done top and bottom of a trailered bass boat. Ive used both single stage and base/clear but only on cars and motorcycles. I know how to use both products and i know whats involved with the sanding priming buffing etc.
That being said im not trying to start any arguments or anyhthing else. Just looking some good honest advice from someone who has used these products.
So with all that being said, ive never painted a boat and was wondering which would be better,as far as durablity is concernd. Base/clear or single stage?

Re: Another Paint Question.

Awl grip or Imron with a good 2 part epoxy primer :)

IF you did both BCCC or SS .. then what is your primary on the toughest product :) .

Re: Another Paint Question.

Well based on the SEARCH most people have had the best luck with a single stage automotive paint and BC/CC DOES NOT produce better results for durability or appearance. I have used single stage w/o problems.

I am hurt! You do not care about our feelings ............ do you think you are the first LOL.

For durability, I've used DuPont Centauri and like the results. Imron is very good but pricey.
For candy colors, metal flake, custom graphics. I use BC/CC

BC/CC can be repaired easily, enamel repairs are more of a challenge.

Re: Another Paint Question.

So basically either or. I didnt know if one or the other would hold up better in the water. As for use,ss is alot easier to use,and produces a deeper single color than bccc,it is also much cheaper. However bccc is easier to fix,and buff, and is allmost a must if muliple colors or artwork is added. Some say it last longer under the sun but i dont really know for sure. I can either way it really dosent matter to me,i was just wondering if one would be better than the other with the water.

Ps. its not your feelings im concerned about..lol.. I just prefer to elimanate all the bs that some folks choose to add for no obvious reason.

Okies legacy..heres the deal with All of them..

BCCC .. Good stuff ( look at all the cars on the road with it ) What brand are you thinking of ?
1. sand and buff ?
2. If metallic..then you know the repairability of that..( hard for most to blend a metallic BCCC ).
3. Tape lines can lead to lifting of the clear and eventually migrate under/at the primer or BC.
4. I did a 53 foot in BCCC .. looked great after the sand and buff. That was done with High end BCCC.

SS. again..what SS product are you thinking of ..
1. Ez to apply
2. Dont know about durability or topcoat appearance with a sand and buff.

Urethane Enamel ( like Awlcraft2000 or Imron ).
1. expensive
2. Sprays well and good finish without sand and buff ( If applied right ).
3. excellent repairability

Gelcoat..
1. EZ to prep
2. durability and repairability is excellent
3. application learning curve is no more then paint.
4. can be left in the water for extended amount of time.
5. less color availability
6. my personaly favorite among all paint/coatings for smaller boats.

This Is a limited list of qualifiers among the products that I have used.

Ive used ppg, imron, tcp global,HOK and dupont in the past. Ive never used gel coat and dont really want to after the research ive been doing. Ive also checked into awlgrip and would like to use it at some point, but not with this project. As for what ill use here will be either dupont nason or tcp global house(basically HOK knock off) But i have had very good results with them and prices are hard to beat. Im still in the air as for ss or bccc. Just depends on the schem. Im leaning towards black with a little grey, but i really dont know at this point.
