A few years ago, my family and I were on a camping trip in Texas with my wife's sister and her family. when we got to the campground, my wife and I , in a rush to get the weekend started, hurried to launch the boat. I backed it down the ramp, got in the boat and backed it off the trailer, and she pulled the trailer back to the campsite. I ran over to the campsite by water, and proceded to help with unloading and setting up tents and equipment. My nephew went to put the fishing gear in the boat and hollered" uncle Mark, why is there so much water in the boat ?"!! I immediatly remembered I forgot to put the plug in, and my 17ft. alum. v-hull was quickly sinking. I got in the boat, which had no bilge pump, and cranked it up. I ran out in the lake to run the water out. due to gas tank and other equipment in the boat, I could not put the plug in from the inside, so after the water ran out, I skirted the bank, and called my brother-in-law out. I gave him the plug, noticed water was comming in quick, told him I woulg go run the water out again, and when I got back to him, I would kill the 50 h.p. motor, and he would put the plug in from the outside, that worked until he went to put the plug in, and DROPPED IT !!! he's in about 4 ft. of water. I took off again and he started diving. I circled for about 5 min before he found the plug, we executed the plan flawlessly the second time, and went on to have a wonderful weekend on the lake.

nice one..I should not tell you but I did the same in my 17' bass boat once..I was in a mo wake zone so just idling..I opened my ski door in the floor to get something and it was full of water..I hit the throttle and turned on sump pump..got most of the water out then hung over back and put in plug after turning off motor..sump pump got the rest..I have put boats in hundreds of times and never done it before or since..LOL also same boat was tied up to my dads dock house..the gutter was aimed right into my boat..well it rained..I wasnt worried as I did have a sump pump on auto. after the rain I went out and the back was under one one side..the rope tied to the dock was holding the other side up..a lot of water comes out of the gutter...lol..I made a rope wench tied to the top of the dock house post..then lashed the rope around the post which pulled the low side up..I had a bucket and helped the pump get caught up..and I do not tie up on the end of the dock any more...

mark--this is why I carry half dozen plugs--they sink. I have them scattered everywhere from boat to car. And keep in mind, there are lots of temporary fixes, including plastic bags; you just have to use the water pressure correctly.

sparkie--once it's in the boat, it's a bilge pump.

I also keep several in the boat, and two more in the truck. They're inexpensive, small, and really make a fellow boaters day when he finds himself in need of a plug, and you hand him one.

Never kept a half dozen, but do keep a spare in the tackle box and one in the truck glove box.

Went to Bass Pro the other day and bought a floating keychain , on it the phrase "don't forget the plug". So I also bought another plug ! I don't ever wanna have to say that a 3 dollar plug cost me my boat . : )

No bilge pump, no spare plug , thats flirting.
We've all done it too...although I had a bilge pump.
I keep a spare plastic (floating) plug on the ignition keychain and I installed 2 bilge pumps. For sure for sure.
I install plug before leaving the driveway now.

My garboard plug is tethered to a wire which is secured to the end of the oil change tube. I keep a spare on the underside of the swim step as shown here:

Lucky you, my rear live well, front live and main drain are three different sizes.

Well, I guess everybody has to do it once or twice. My jon boat has for some reason a 2"diameter drain plug, so the times I've left it out, that sucker sinks like a rock. It's the old "ramp fever" that causes this stuff. When we get to the ramp, my wife's one big main job is to say,"put the plug in, old man!"....so far, so good!

Seasence makes a whole drain with a check valve that will let water out but not in. It was one of my upgrades this winter..9 bucks and a little sealer. I can say that it lets water out, but hope to never have to verify that it does not let it in.

Home Depot carries PVC Plugs that are the exact thread depth as my plug for 97 cents. I bought six myself after almost sinking mine last year... I would hate to sink it over a 97 cent plug!! HAHA imagine
