Parts book shows the anode under the anit-cavitation plate, but mine is on top.Does it matter? Was trying to find others on line and saw one in the same spot from the 80's.How do I know if it is zinc or magnesium?Do these have any affect on steering?I see some motors have fin shaped anode.

Anodes can be Aluminum, Zinc or Magnesium. Magnesium is lighter then Aluminum, and Aluminum is lighter then Zinc. Most don't have markings which say which is which.

The big thing with anodes is, they are not needed unless you leave the boat in the water and connected to shore power. Most anodes are above the cav plate except for behind the prop. The ones which have a fin behind the prop are used to help with torque steer. If the boat keeps trying to turn right, turn the fin more to the left
