When replacing the wood in the transom of a aluminum boat what is the best thing to paint the aluminum before you install wood?

Re: aluminum

Zinc chromate primer … there is no epoxy or aluminum in it. Available at marine supply retailers, or aircraft supply/repair.

Hint: about $14/can at West Marine, about $4/can on-line from aircraft websites. Exact same product, even same label on the cans.

18Rabbit, do you remember where you saw the primer at that price? I need a bunch, and to get it at that price would be a plus.

Thanks
Rick

Just did a search on Froogle
and found several.
Style Pilot Shop has it in yellow or green. They also have prop-paint, but I wonder how it'd do for us?

Re: aluminum

compared to an epoxy primer that rattle can stuff has the protection value of a kleenex. it is going to be under the plywood, wet, subject to abrasion from differential expansion, not readily touched up. spend the big bucks. a quart of self etching epoxy zinc chromate primer is the way to do it right, do it once. check the marine paint makers web sites.
