I've inherited an Alumacraft fishing boat from my father-in-law. I believe it's a 1958-1961 Deep C. There is no tag on the transom as it is pretty rotted out and must have fallen off. She is in desperate need of a new transom. I've tried searching the forums but couldn't find a comparable situation. Basically, I need a DIY outline of how to replace the transom. The outer board was easy enough to take off, but I am having difficulty with the inner board. The corner caps are riveted on. Do I drill out the rivets to remove the caps so the the old transom board will slide out? If so, what size drill should I use? Do I rivet them back on, or use stainless bolts?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Dennis

White oak 1-1/16" for the inner board, marine grade plywood for the outside. You might as well drill out the rivets even on the handles. Best way to do it is to do it right, going to have to learn how to buck rivets. Great boat BTW you can lay that boat right on it's side and it will not flip. Post some pictures up.

Where can I find the HIN? There plate on the port side of the transom is gone. Plus, I've seen a few posts that include a pic of it, but it doesn't include the number, only a model name.

Need to take some measurements, most alum boats use anywhere from an 1/8" up to a 1/4" dia rivet depending on what it is used for.. start with a small drill and keep going a little bigger until the rivet head pops off. Then measure the rivet body. Best to re rivet, but many just use good quality SS bolts and nut along with a good sealer. Rivets look better and are easy to learn how. Lots to read on repairing and re riveting..

There is no HIN on a boat that old. Only a serial number

Thanks for the info guys.
My next question is, how do I get the transom cap off? I removed the rivets holding the corner caps in place. The C channel shape that covers the length of the transom board appears to be spot welded on. Hopefully, there is a way to get it off without having to remove the two center brackets that are also riveted on.

I recently replaced a transom on an Alumacraft 14ft FD, circa 1959.

I don't check this forum regularly.
