Alternative to Joe Reeves Tachometer Test?

Unfortunately, my 1995 / 175 HP powerhead does not have the "terminal strip" that Joe refers to in the FAQ. The yellow/gray wire runs directly from the rectifier/regulator to the stator, and the gray wire from the rectifier/regulator runs into the engine harness, to the VRO unit, and ultimately to the tach. There are no terminal points along the way to tap into the wiring, so that makes the job a little harder.

Wondering if this will work, instead:

1. Disconnect the gray wire from the rear of the tach up under the dash.

2. Clip a long jumper wire to the tach in its place, and run it all the way back to the yellow/gray wire coming off the rectifier/regulator.

3. Slice some insulation off the yellow/gray wire and clip the jumper wire to the exposed wire.

4. Test the tach per the instructions, then seal up the yellow/gray wire insulation when I'm finished.

The goal of Joe's test is to connect the tach directly to the yellow/gray wire from the rectifier/regulator, so I think my method should work. Anyone see a flaw in my approach?
