Alpha One noise

4.3 mercruiser with a alpha one outdrive. Have a noise coming from behind the motor with it in or out of gear. Gimble bearing? Is there anything else back there that could go wrong?

Ayuh,... I guess it kinda depends on what kinda Noise your hearin'....

It sounds like a dry bearing, its not a crunching noise it just sounds like something has run dry. The noise gets louder when you speed the motor up, but like I said it does it in gear and out. Any suggestions of where to start looking?

gimble bearing is spinning in gear and out...... does it get louder or change when you turn the wheel?

No, it doesnt seem to get louder when i turn but it is hard to tell. Definitly get louder when i speed up though.

There is also a bearing under the top cover to the upper unit which is the highest in the outdrive. Try using a stick to your ear and touch the other end to the top cover while is running on muffs

have you checked the lube in the outdrive???
