Alpha One Gen II - Question

After obtaining a few tips from this forum, I changed the gear oil in the drive assembly today. I did however encounter something odd and wanted to see if it was "normal".

After opening the air vent and the lower drain plug, the gear oil oozed out until the resevior was only 1/2 drained. Then is stopped. I pulled the resevior off to clean it and tried to simply blow into the hose that I had disconnected. No air would go in??? Clogged?? or is there some sort of one way pressure valve in the system? Should all the oil have drained out of the resevior?

I landed up emptying the rest of the resevior to get rid of the mucky stuff on the bottom and resintalled it. Then I filled drive backup using gear oil pump through drain plug until the oil came out of the vent hole. I then filled the resevior back up.

Based on the trailer/driveway combo, I could not get the drive perfectly level. It was at approx 10 degrees tilt up. Could that of had something to do with it?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Alpha One Gen II - Question

hello
thats why they say to clean the resivoir at every gear oil change. seems the anti-wear solids come out of solution and end up as "mud" in the bottom of the tank. especially using mercs HP gear lube. on a genII I would switch to the volvbo GL5 synthetic. DO NOT switch on any bravo units. but in any case the resivoir needs maint just like the manual says. there is a check valve in the oil cap but it is there to prevent liquids from exiting the cap and allow air into it. your refill method is acceptable just "overfill" the resivoir about 1/2 " to allow for air in the hose between the drive and the bottle. then test the alarm before refilling the bottle. had a bad one just last week. before filling the bottle turn the key on and listen for an audible. if its already full use a thin screwdriver and with the key on engine off push the float down. if no audible further inspection may be required. be aware that some low end entry level boats dont have an audible. if it does not its reccomended.

Re: Alpha One Gen II - Question

You should also be aware that the alarm will be sounding because of a 'low oil pressure' with the engine off. The easiest I find is to just pull the wire off the oil pressure switch, that way you will only have an alarm if the drive oil level switch is working. Just remember to reconnect the oil pressure alarm switch you you're done.

Chris.........

75 degrees! We had 108 yesterday......
