I have been hunting around this and other forums, and only found one thread that discusses the issue, but isn't clear on the question I have. I have:
99 Sea Ray Sundeck 210, 5.0, Alpha One Gen 2 Mercruiser Outdrive. SN is Hard to read 0L714621 I think
I had oil leaking into the bellows, replaced the oil seal in the upper drive shaft bearing set, new yoke, set rolling torque on the bearing set/yoke, and decided while I am in there to replace the driven shaft seals at the bottom of the upper half of the outdrive. No problem getting the two seals out, bought Quicksilver Marine 26-88397A-1 seal kit and only got one seal for that driven shaft seal. It is a double lip seal with springs on both sides of the seal. I seams that the seal is a bit thicker on one side than the other, is tapered around the outer edge on one side, and has a little recess on the other outer edge. My manual provides instructions for two seals. I'm sure this is the correct replacement part, but there are no instructions on which way to install the seal.
Does the thicker side go down, or up? The two seals that came out look identical and based on what I have seen, are the same part number. The updated parts diagram shows 66302 as the part number. Anyone have MFG instructions on which way to install it?
Thanks,
Jeff

Nevermind...isn't that always the case. As soon as I posted, did a different search on the actual part number and found a couple of threads on the issue, and my answer. Dubs answered it below. With the upper half upside down, the taper goes down (eventually up) and that corresponds to the heavier face goes in the seal seat first. Thanks Dubs.
