Went fishing last night, got 2 nice cats, beautiful night , everything worked as it should.

I got out about 6:30 pm and called it at midnight because I have tickets to the game today( GO IRISH!!!) and wanted to get a decent nights sleep, home 1:30, posting this at 7, geuss that didn't work.

Get back to the ramp which has a big cement wall and "dock", eased up to it, grabbed my launch rope and when I got close I jumped out and turned around to keep the boat from hitting the giant concrete peer and hook up the rope except I pushed off to hard and the boat is about a foot too far away to reach and going away.

Well crap, I remember I am holding the rope and hook so I throw it at the boat trying to wrap it around the trolling motor, hooks for a second then, PLOP, now she is 6' away and going.

I know I have one more shot at it before it is too far away and I have to go swimming, so I throw the rope again and pull really slow, it hooks, then slips, then hooked up again and I got it in but it was way way too close, I am really glad I didn't have to jump in, I was in the river and it was 40 last night, water is 61, would have been a very long cold ride home.

I will never ever again get out of the boat without the rope already on, that is the closest I want to come to actually perfoming a stupid human trick.

Am I getting this right? You jumped off the boat, with line in hand, and not tied to the boat? I recon if thats right, you have one to add to your "not to do book". Glad to hear everything worked out ok.

Another reason people like to sit at ramps, for entertanment. Im not to sure I would admit to doing something like that, as common pratice.

well I had to do the stupid human trick about three week ago and am still sore. I had hooked the rope but it somehow came off when I tugged it and there went the boat.

gosh 5150, yer an old salt too.... been around here a long time... guess everyone makes a mistake (yes, me included) every now and then... glad ya got'er back w/o to much trouble, like a swim in cold water... good thing ya weren't on the missouri river where i do the river at. a swim probably wouldn't have been enough to get it back. ya don't even get one chance hardly on that river. ie. couple years ago a fellow went after his boat w/ pfd. didn't get the boat and drowned in ft. of his family. agian, glad it worked out better for you.

I know EXACTLY how you felt.

I was launching and had the bow line "looped over the winch handle. Well, the rope slipped off the winch handle backing down the ramp and as I floated the boat, it floated away. I had nothing handy to catch it and started scrambling through the truck, found a rope and some metal piece, but it was too late, boat was 30' away drifting in the current. Luckily the marine was 100 yards down stream and all I had to do was scale the locked gate and catch the boat. Same as you I missed the first time, but finally hooked it.

Yeah, not doing that one again.......

Re: Almost lost the boat last night!

I had gotten up at 4:20 am for work and got pounded there, training 3 new guys plus all the usual stuff so I will chalk it up to being tired.

I normally do hook up before I jump out, just wasn't thinking this time and certainly won't do it again.

The game was awsome, tickets were on the 30, home side, 6 rows up and I had a parking pass too which got me within 100 yards of the stadium, it was a dream day for an old IRISH fan like me.

he he I know where your mind was after the first two games. ND put a good one on Michigan St. I went to the UNLV/ Hawaii game that day and had to pinch myself a couple of times because the Rebels were winning big. Glad you didn't have to jump in to get your boat.

Re: Almost lost the boat last night!

I was docking on the Nassau River in Florida a couple of weeks ago, current going out, wind blowing in, and I must have looked like a real amateur, greenhorn or some kinda fool to those guys fishing off the dock! Sorta embarassing, but I finally got tied up without gettin' killed! Maybe need to install some bow-thrusters on my jon boat! Good Luck!
