finally have my 1981 60hp johnson running, amazing after sitting neglected for 10yrs it fired right up and ran great. my question is the foam from the air silence has long ago become some mouses bed. can i replace it with any type of open cell foam and does it need to be oiled like other two stroke engines?

Re: air silencer foam

?? Are you sure it is supposed to have foam in there? Better check a parts list. They are on-line at BRP's website.

Are you talking about the upper engine cover/cowl? If so, the sound blanket is less than $20.00 list. You just need a good adhesive and some single edged razor blades to cut the old one loose.

Teperature inside a engine cover can go as high as 200 degrees so you want to be careful what you use.

the silencer was off the carbs when i got the engine last year, there were scraps of yellow foam in the box along with various mouse stuff and i therefore assumed the mice destroyed whatever foam was there. its a johnson j60elc1h.if there is no foam how does the silencer work??

The silencer basically works like a velocity stack. It just channels the air, but does not filter it. The only foam lines the cowl. I recently replaced my foam with mylar wrapped air bubble insulation. So far so good.

thanks, wasnt sure if the silencer worked like an air filter on a car or lawnmower. the previous owner must have put some foam in there for whatever reason.thanks again

Its not uncommon for the cowl foam to degrade and get sucked into the air silencer. Take a look at the condition of the foam on your cowl.

I've always wondered why the air silencers didn't have a screen like a velocity stack. It'd at least keep the chunks of foam from getting slurped up.

Quite the opposite happened. The mice took the foam and carried it into the air silencer. There isn't much dust on the lake so silencers are not supposed to have a filter (foam, paper or otherwise).

well that certainly makes sense, since nearly all the cowling foam is missing.thankfully the mice couldnt get into the engine since the carbs were corroded shut.
