Hi there, probably a stupid newby question but here goes, I have twin 454's and my mates are concerned about a backfire coasing an explosion, i have explained about the sniffer and the blowers but they are suggestinf a different style air filter. Is there other options for the air filter?? A the moment they have pretty non restriction crome ones that dont actually have a removable filter and so would probably allow a backfire to flow freely through??

cheers

If you have the OEM item on your engine, it's called a flame arrestor (and designed for the job), not an air filte.

What you need to do is find out why your engine is backfiring.

Ayuh,... I guess my question is,... What's there Now,..??

Boats don't use an Air Filter,....
It should have a Flame Arrester instead...

Flame arrestors come in many styles and shapes. K&N does have USCG approved air filters if you do want a filter.
The flame arrestor on the left was the stock one off of a Mercruiser 330hp 454 when it was replaced with the one in the middle we got a 150 RPM jump at WOT.

A K&N filter is a complete waste of money.

If you really think your flame arrestor is limiting your top end, do one run with it off and one run with it on keeping the engine hatch open.

I don't think they are a waste of money at all, I like them so much I have them on both of my diesels and plan on changing my boat to a K&N this year, I have seen increased gas mileage and fuel economy on both my Ford 7.3 Powerstroke and my Dodge Cummins, I think they are well worth the money

I had definate fuel use and acceleration improvements on my H2 when I installed the K&N Cold air intake system, but I seriously doubt I would see anything on the boat. The truck's factory air inlet was restrictive but the boats flame arrester on the MPI throat isn't restrictive at all.

Some swear by 'em and some swear at 'em...kinda like a "What's the best oil" debate.

However, just be aware that, because they are an oiled filter, the oil can contaminate the MAF sensor on fuel injected engines (both auto and marine) causing issues.

If it does happen, remove the MAF, clean the hair-like wires with contact cleaner or Brake Kleen, let air dry, and re-install.

They are a waste on money on a boat and they are a waste of money on a car. I have bought a bunch of them for various automotive vehicles. I have just read too many tests that show how much dirt gets by them. They may free flow a little better(probably not even noticable unless you put the engine on a dyno) but the flow comes at a cost.

Kinda silly for a marine application.

i don't see how anything aftermarket could be any less restrictive than a clean mercruiser fa. they're just plain open except for the slats that i assume arrest a flame, if present.

that said. had me a fx140 pwc. it had a paper, gauze, or something similar for it's fa. that one was restrictive and an aftermarket that was just 3 screens sandwiched together did bump rpm upward. pretty substantially if i remember right.

but for a mercruiser. i can't see how a kn fa would be any better than the oem fa.

If you really think your flame arrestor is limiting your top end, do one run with it off and one run with it on keeping the engine hatch open.
that seems like a good idea (assuming yer not backfiring and throwing flames) . then ya'd know as ya can't get any less restrictive than nothing at all.

i have worked for both gm and ford. Ford has a tsb out stating k&n filters can cause dusting of the diesel engines and will not be covered under warranty. Gm has a tsb out stating if the maf sensor has oil contaimination from a K&n filter it also is not covered under warranty. its purely physics people to flow more air the filter has to be more pourous...more pourous means more crap gets past the filter...never have and never will run K&n or similar filters on any machines i own.

Not working with air filters here tailgunner, only flame arrestors. They are not filters they are flame arrestors.

i understood don... i simply quoted the wrong post...here is the one i meant to quote referring to the 7.3's.

Think about it. If they let more air in, they let more "other stuff" in also. You can't change physics. Sure death to a diesel. Ever hear the word: "dusted"?
