I have a 83 Johnson gt150, I know I am in need of a pinion gear (or bendix) and probably the spring and nut at least, I have not had the starter tested or pulled it apart yet. The price for these parts alone OEM is about $60. I got to looking and there are arco starters brand new on ebay for about $60. I was wondering peoples opinions on the aftermarket ones, anybody have good/bad luck? Thanks for any input

I've always had good luck with the Arco brand if it's the one in Pensacola FL. JMO.

when you say you need a new bendix, spring, and nut, is it because the bendix will not rise and engage flywheel or is it worn? If it is just that the bendix will not rise many times it is due to insufficient battery, poor connections and such or a weak starter motor itself. The bendix rises due to the spinning of starter.

If the battery and and cables and connections are good I would just put a whole new starter in and not mess around with replacing a bendix. I have been useing ARCO starters for years and only had one that was bad. It was bad right out of the box. Not bad considering the hundreds of starters I have bought from them.

Hey thanks for the responses guys, I think I would rather just have a new one rather than patching up an old one. Boobie did they sell out or something? I know that can be bad news for quality control..
