Depending on your bracket, I'd guess you're going to be looking for a longshaft. I'd also consider a 'sail' or 'high thrust' version considering the size of the boat. The usual things to look for: overall condition, compression, check gear oil, etc. I like older OMC's for bargain kickers, but some deals can be found on others. Shop around to make sure you don't overpay or buy someone else's nightmare!

Thanks that is good advice. I see how expensive they are even used and makes the boat look really cheap next to the price of a kicker!!!!

What do you think about Nissan? Also what does OMC stand for duh!! Is that a brand name?

Re: Advice on buying a kicker

Well, another Islander, Hi there :)

With the size of your boat I would definately look towards the 15 long shaft. Pretty easy to find used around here.

I know what you mean about the price of used motors making the boat look cheap  I've just been through that routine myself.

As your current motor runs unmixed gas you might want to try to find a 4 stroke, so you don't need to carry a different fuel. It will be more expensive than the 2 strokes, but more convenient. I went with a 4 stroke because my main (2 stroke) outboard is a precision mix so the bow tank carries standard fuel, didn't want to waste the room in my 16' for an extra tank.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to look up island. Lots of boat yards on the web. I've had good luck in Port Alberni.

Thanks for the advice and yes I thought of a 4 stroke but they are super expensive. Just had fun with trying to put in a new bilge pump so tomorrow might be a 'sunk' boat hahahah.

Anyone know of a late night marine supply in Victoria ???

I hear Mercs are good any thoughts?

Late night marine supply in Victoria  Not in this lifetime.

Yeah Mercs are good. Lot's of them around too. I had good luck with my '93 Evinrude 15. Great power, easy on fuel and very reliable.

Might want to check Barkley Exchange in Vic. They had a 15 Evinrude Long shaft in a while back, don't know if they still do or not.
