Anyone using Mercury EFI's 97-99? Just looking for opinions on reliability, fuel economy, anything would be appreciated. Am considering a used 250 for replacement of my Evinrude 225 Ocean Pro.

And maybe a gauge or two. Tim gauges are different. Most others are universal or adaptable. V-6s suck lots of gas no matter who makes them. Expect about 8gal/hour ballpark @ full throttle.

i think the fuel usage is more than that.

I would guess fuel consumption is approximately triple that (depending on the boat) since my 75HP burns 7.5 g/hr at WOT as indicated on my fuel flow monitor.

I'm going by my brother-in-law's bass boat with a 150 V-6 that drains a 12 gallon tank in 2 hours. Bottom line, the Merc is going to use about the same gas as the Evinrude.

Do you guys think that there is any appreciable fuel economy increase going from my old carburated 225 to the compuerized 250 EFI?

I'm looking into a similar situation - thinking about going from a pair of '89 Evinrude 120's to mid/late '90's Merc 200 EFI's. I have heard EFI's will see @ 15% better efficiency than a same size carb'd engine on same boat.

In my case, I think I will see some efficiency by running in a lower rpm cruise range. You won't see a big change in this dept going from 225 to 250. Cold starts might be a bit smoother for you, maybe a bit cleaner burning over-all. but I am guessing @ a 15% improvement in fuel burn in your case.

A Merc 275 Verado burns @ 9gph at cruise, so 8 gph on a 250 EFI @ wot is not going to happen - maybe times 3 if you are lucky.

The EFI burn as much as carbed engine( 22 to 25 gph), but they do have better throttle response. The DFI(optimax) is a different story, At WOT not much difference, at part throttle some difference depending on speed, at Idle these thing run forever on a cup of fuel.
