96 Mercruiser 3.0 LX Alpha One No Spark

Hello all,

I have a 96 Glastron with a Mercruiser 3.0 LX Alpha One, Ser. No. K001837

I have researched all the forum topics related to my problem I can find, but I still cannot find the culprit to my problem, so I'm making a new post.

This boat has not been started in over a decade. After much work of getting it ready to fire up, I have no spark from plugs.

The engine cranks over strong and smooth.

I have replaced the ignition coil, plugs, wires, completely rebuilt the distributor rotor assy with new cap, rotor, pre coil, ignition control module, with all new parts.

I've grounded plugs coming from distributor with no spark. I've plugged in spark plug directly from coil and grounded, with no spark.

I checked my gaps with a feeler gauge on the magnetic rotor, and my gap is .008", where the spec is .016", but I'm thinking that this still should induce the coil to make a spark. The shaft spins smoothly without friction.

I have ensured the key is in the on position, and the switch is in the run position. I've tried to start with both the key and a remote start momentary push button i've hooked up temporarily for testing purposes.

After about 10 days of troubleshooting I am out of ideas and any suggestions or ideas is greatly appreciated. I feel at this point its a matter of something obvious that I am overlooking, as I don't know of any other parts in the ignition system I can replace.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Do ya have power at the coil's (+) terminal, with the key "On",..??

Thank you for your reply, Bondo.

My coil doesn't look like a large capacitor like some of the older models. It looks like the picture below. It has two two pin keyed molexes which can only plug in a certain way, and the output to the distributor. One of the pairs goes to the distributor, while the other two come from the boats' electrical system.

Since all the components in the ignition system have been replaced, I'm thinking that the problem is in the boats' electrical system. I'll be testing the electrical system to see if I can find the problem and get back with some results soon.
