Hello Everyone!

I've suddenly got a very random issue with the power trim for my outboard motor. When I trim, or tilt for that matter, by depressing the trim switch, the motor will go in the direction I want it to but only a little bit and then trim will cut out. Interestingly, if I leave the button depressed (in either direction), after a few seconds (usually 1-3) the trim will suddenly continue for a bit, then cut out again after a little travel for another couple of seconds. Again if I keep holding it, eventually it will then engage again for a second or so, then the cycle will repeat itself--trim--stop--trim--stop :grumpy:

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Do you think it could be bad relay(s)? Is something perhaps shorting out?

Have you checked the fluid level in it ??

Fluid level was topped up last fall and there was no evidence of a leak. Would low fluid level had something to do with it being intermittent?

Okay, when this happens give the trim mtr a few raps with a small hammer and see what happens.

Tried to tap the trim motor when it stops, no effect at all. Also switched out the trim relays with new ones, that didn't make a difference either :s

That behavior sounds like maybe the brushes on the trim motor need replaced.

You didn't mention if you can hear the motor itself continue running while this is going on, but if it is then it's not a motor issue but rather a hydraulic problem. If it's the motor cutting in and out it's an electrical / motor issue, and since you've already changed the relays that pretty much leaves the switch, a bad connection (maybe a bad ground), or the motor. And this is exactly how DC motors act when the brushes get worn.
