Hello!!! I have a 1989 88spl Evinrude on A 89 Javelin Bass boat. I just seen today there was lower gear oil leaking out from around the prop shaft I believe. It is a Steady drip. I need to know What I'm really looking at, Where I can find a new seal for the shaft and Basically, Do I need to pull the lower unit from the mid-section to replace the seal? Just some advice and friendly tips and tricks would be great!! In the picture, The oil Is coming from the Smaller shaft on the back there.. You can kinda see the seal and where is is dripping from. But yeah.. Please help!!
-Thanks

The Propshaft Seal can be replaced without having to remove the case from the Engine, the Bearing Carrier and Propshaft can all come out. The Shiftshaft Seal will require removal of the case. I think you need to reseal the entire case, as the seals below the water pump are likely the Culprit and are letting water in the case, forcing the Oil out of the other seals

I dont belive so. It smells like lower unit oil. Does fuel ever leak from down there? Idk why fuel would be down there. It leaks from around that shaft inside the red circle on the picture. I don't believe its coming from above.

Are you positive that is not fuel and oil?

Where can a guy get a kit of seals? And I'm not good with terms as of.. case, bearing carrier. Can I just take off the lower unit? Would be easier?

Well 2 strokes send a lot of Fuel(gas and oil) out the Exhaust, and fuel also spills out of the carbs when the engine is tilted up...
Gear Oil does stink to High Heaven compared to Fuel, so it easy to tell them apart

Well to be honest.. it only runs out when the motor is tilted up. But it looks to be coming from around the shaft. I will send pic.

I've also left the motor down and lower unit level.. now I'm thinking it's fuel.. because it was blue the first time I seen it.. and the 2 stroke oil I put in the fuel is blue. ... carb rebuild? Fk..

You can open the Drain of the Lower Unit and see if any water comes out, or if the bit of Oil that drains looks like Mocha/Irish Creme

Might be a High Fuel Level, but as I said those carbs, often pour fuel out of the Vents when the engine is tilted up. A few bounces while being trailered helps too. The Air Silencers on the Carbs had Drain Hoses to dump the spilled fuel overboard or in the Lower Cowl. Also any Pressure built up in a Portable Fuel Tank can push the Fuel up and out, as the inlet valves in the Fuel Bowl really can't be closed when the engine tilted up

Okay, ill drain thrower unit. Make sure there is no water. I also don't know if my tank has a vent. Might out one on. It's a permanent tank. But let me investigate and I'll get back. Would fuel constantly run out? I feel like it's alot for 1 day of sitting.

A tank built into the boat would be continuously vented

Also.. it does have a vent.. maybe it plugged over winter ill clear the vent.. change the lower unit. And check back in. Thanks for some feedback.
