Hello, this motor was given to me but it had fallen off into the water and nothing was done it, should I part it out or do you think I should restore it? Thanks.

I'd restore it if it were me, but, don't do it if you're trying to sell it for a profit. A total tear down and re-build will rack up some serious time. That's a good motor and to me, it's well worth the effort. Plus, it'll make a great project for you.

I have plenty of time this winter, what would have been affected first from the water? Will proceed to tear down, thanks.

You can save it.

First thing is to get any left over water out of it and lube it. Do this now and do not try to run it.

How long has it been sitting after its bath?

Do you think the rings are frozen in the cylinders?
Is the crank frozen? Pull the plugs and try to spin it.
You also have to get to the crank bearings and lube them.
Remove the carb and intake manifold to lube the crank bearings.

Lube anything and everything. Get the rings, cylinder sleeves and bearings protected with oil.

Spin the cylinders a while and look for water vapor or sludge coming out of them. You have to be sure all the water is out.

Clear out fuel path all the way from fuel line connector past the carburetor jets and bowl to intake manifold; water, sludge ... again, get all the water out and be sure parts are good and lubed and articulate the way they should.

Then we can talk about testing ignition....

I pulled the plugs, top one looks good, bottom looks junky. Can not turn flywheel by hand. Trying to get a manual but am taking things off, should i drop the lower unit? Does the engine block come off motor housing? Thanks.

If it was sunk, then not dried out and run after it was retrieved, it will likely need all internal steel bits replaced. That includes crankshaft, rods, all bearings, and rings. May need some of the electricals replaced, too, as the stator has some steel laminates that can rust if left wet. Depending on the rust condition inside, the cylinder walls may simply need a honing to clean up any rust.

Before committing to anything, I'd tear the powerhead down to the last bolt and see how bad things look. Sometimes you get lucky and water didn't get into everything.

Yes, the motor block comes off the exhaust housing. I would indeed pull the lower unit, if for no other reason than if you're going to rebuild the powerhead, you might as well put an impeller in while you're at it...

I'm pretty sure it wasn't run after and i really don't know how long it was in the drink, but by the looks of it, not too long submerged, in fact, you can hardly tell it went swimming, thanks again.

Ok, pulled lower unit off, wet sludge on drive shaft, wet mud and sand in prop housing, can't believe it's not dried up. Put tranny fluid in cylinders, one hour later i can turn flywheel round and round by hand, will now clean up fuel route to carb, should i remove carb? I want to apply 12 volts to starter to see if it turns, shouldn't smoke too bad, right? What's next?
