I may be purchasing a boat with a 1984 merc 75ELPT, and would like any input about problems with this motor.

It is being sold by the elderly parents of the dead former owner!? They have little info to pass on except that it has been used about 6 times every year, and "That the owner didn't work on it himself, so he must have taken it in to have it serviced." The entire unit looks almost new, inside and out, with no signs of repair or replacement.

I am not looking for the basic "what to look for when buying a used motor".

I am specifically looking for parts problems or failures that are likely to pop up on this motor. Any input or opinions on this unit would be appreciated.

:) Thanks, rd.

Forgot to add test float info:

All seemed ok. Started and ran well, idled rough for a few minutes, then smoothed out. Ran slow for 5 minutes, then pounded the water for about 15, then ran slow for another 5, tried to get it good and hot. IT actually ran better than my '96 mariner 25.

I'll tell you that I've had great luck with my 1984, 50hp Merc. Very solid motor and I think it still looks very new considering it's age... I inherited it from my father who didn't really pamper it much,,, I've done a little gasket work on it and that's it... Runs great... I think it's only had two tun-ups in it's life....

Good luck...

Well I guess from the lack of input, and from the almost non existent entries in the forum archives, that these units were real solid. Sooo, I guess I buy it on Saturday. thanks
