Bought the boat with the lower unit off had a friend help put it back on Merc mechanic. He said I was missing a guide to help make sure the waterpump tube went into the whole so first question is there such a thing on top of the impellar casing??? I had a real powerful stream of water the whole time but within a few minutes alarm stayed on constant. Stuck thermostat?? Whats the best steps to start the diagnoostic process, maybe new water pump first.

The telltale lets you know that the waterpump is functioning, but does not tell you if the water is circulating through the cooling passages of the engine.

I would check the thermostats first. You will need a kit and some time and patience. The kit is 18-3673: http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=111072&gd_row=36&**********=113183807

If the thermostats are not causing the problem, check the water passage deflectors in the cylinder cooling passages.

There was no guide on the water tube. There is top section of the housing that should be held on by two screws.
