Hi everyone I am new to the site and a second time owner of an 18' Starcraft. I purchased this one almost 2 years ago after nearly 25 years since the first one. This is great boat and was ghlad to have one for a second time around. This has a 7.5 merc aux. motor as well a 90 Johnson. My question is about the mountfor the aux. engine. The aux. engine is torking the transom and beginning to tear things apart in the slop well. Has anyone had to deal with this? I have been tying it back during trailering and now during use with a winch type strap but want to address the problem for real. Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: '79 18' SS Auxilary Engine Mount

On my 18' Starcraft I have a 8hp Mercury trolling motor and a 115hp Mercury. I replaced the transom 2 years ago with 2 layers of 3/4" plywood coated with resin. The auxilary motor is mounted on a outboard motor bracket so I can raise & lower it for fishing or traveling to a differant fishing spot.
It sounds to me that you are getting ready to do the same thing. Do you have any dryrot in the transom?
Replacing the transom plywood isn't as hard as a glass boat. Just take pictures as you go and the re-install will be a snap.

Re: '79 18' SS Auxilary Engine Mount

Thanks Honker....I do have an auxilary mount thant the motor hangs on. It is an older one and is mounted in such a way that the top is only bolted on the one side while the other side hangs over the transom cutout for the main engine. I don't think I can slide it over as the toe eye will be in the way. I was considering changing the mount but do not want to purchase one only to find that it wouldn't fit any better. Do you know what type you have? Maybe that would give me a start. As far as rot ...the transom seems ok. The main engine mounting bolts are beginning to crush thru the transom. I am going to use an aluminum plate instead of the washers to spread the pressure. I do appreciate the response.
Thanks again..Don
