My fishing boat sat for 3 years, (my fishing buddy died and I lost interest for a while but I'm baaack!) It ran great when I stored it. It was stored properly with fogged cylinders and crankcase, fuel stabilizer-refreshed every year and pumped into the carbs twice/yr, etc. I started with fresh fuel last week. Nothing has changed, same prop, boat weight, etc. Motor starts right up, idles great (smooth, no misses) but when I go to accelerate the engine goes up to about 1500 RPM and just hangs there (even with throttle partially open or wide open) for maybe 1 minute to sometimes several minutes, there are no obvious spark plug misses then finally it "kicks-in" (or maybe gets to a "threshold" RPM) and takes off like it should. It runs great above maybe 3,000 RPM (I did not note the exact RPM that it kicked in at) with normal throttle response. If I go back to idle this whole scenario repeats itself. I have been told that it could be the stator (low RPM section) that's bad. Let me know your expert opinion.
I have a small (voltage) multi-meter. What are the steps to test the stator, and do I need some sort of adapter to test it with my multi-meter? (like I read in another thread). Can I do it in the driveway or do I have to be on the water? I am 2 Hours from any marine repair shop so I really need to do this myself because the budget is tight (I have rebuilt many car engines, carbs, etc but never worked on a 2-stroke outboard, so I can handle it with some expert advice) THANKS!
