Hello all,

My boat was working fine for 2 trips out after putting a new impeller on.

During the last outing the boat got stuck on the trailer and i had to give it a lot of juice to try and get her off. Although the prop was spinning it did not seem to have enough torque and it made a clicking sound.

After pushing her off the trailer, on the water in reverse it seemed to work but didn't seem to have the same speed or power in reverse that it should.

Is the lower unit going out? Any tips, suggestions, or instruction? (details will be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your sage advise.

gbill

How does it preform in forward gear. You may have spun the prop. Where is the clicking sound coming from? Power head, mid section, or lower unit.

Where in the dfw area are you located, which lake do you fish. Im from Ft Worth, fish Marine Creek and Eagle Mountain.

gbillingsly there is a place there in Ft Worth called Gunter Marine, he is the best I-6 mechanic in Tx, you might give him a call and ask for Mark, that is if he is still in bussiness, Barber Boats have some very talented mechanics too.

Sorry to cut in like this, but RickRick1 could you please e-mail me.

gbillingsly,

Do a search on this board using the words "shift rod" or "merc. shift rod".

I recall that getting the shift rod adjusted right on those engines could be a bit tricky.

I do not believe your lower unit is engaging fully in reverse. Don't operate it it that way until you figure it out. If it is not engaging fully, you will wipe out the clutch dog in short order.

Thanks guys, I'll give someone a call - i guess i was hoping it was something simple.

P.S. It is clicking in the lower unit and it works perfectly in forward gear.

djohns is right on (again), I believe. That ticking noise is most likely the teeth in the gears of your lower unit trying to eat each other up. Are you putting your shift lever all the way sharply/forcefully into reverse? If you are, then the problem should be fixed by a simple adjustment of your shift cable so that the lower unit is fully engaged in reverse. ;)
It really shouldn't require a trip to a dealer, it's a simple adjustment, then again maybe so simple that a good/honest dealer would do it for free as a goodwill jesture. :D

Thanks for the tip. My hopes are that it's just an adjustment without tearing into it again. I guess I'll get out the manual and try to locate how to adjust the cable first.

Look in your manual for shift rod adjustment/set up rather than control cable adjustment.

Relatively simple fix but serious problems if not remedied immediately.

Re: 76Merc1150 - Clicking in reverse

gbillinsly if you will email me your phone number I will call you and if possible help over the phone. I am in Ft Worth. It sounds like you may need to either adjust shift linkages or adjust where it connects at the lower unit. I have found that when dropping the lower unit that if I will shift it into forward gear prior to dropping the lower unit then making a note of where (side) the shift linkage is in the lower unit it is alot easier to get back right. My E-mail is rbarrow@dfwairport.com.

Re: 76Merc1150 - Clicking in reverse

 RESOLUTION (almost) :

With RICKRICKS moral support and technical advise, we removed the lower unit and adjusted the cables to see if we could get rid of the clicking sound. After finally advancing the cable ALL THE WAY we got the lower unit to stop clicking when in neutral, forward and reverse.

I took her out on the water a couple days ago and everything appears to work normally - except when I give it more than idle speed gas in reverse. When under load the lower unit clicks quite a bit. I am assuming that I need a new lower unit, or just dont need to be in any situations that call for having reverse power - like taking her off the trailer or coming in too fast at the dock.

one thing to check before you tear her apart is
the cable. can you disconnect and try to shift
manually? once had a cable that was fine in forward,
but got kinked in reverse somehow.
sure sounds like the cable or control box 2 me.
good luck,
M.Y.
