95 75hp oG086583 3 jaw reverse. The forward and reverse gear had a lot of wear on the jaws so I had them rebuilt. The owner (friend) was having the reverse gear slip when in R, so he tightened up the shift linkage, after I got the L/U rebuilt, you can manually change the gear on the L/U from F/N/R, turn the drive shaft and the prop responds properly. When I went to re-install the L/U, I can't seem to get it to take reverse from the shift linkage. I put the linkage in F, the L/U in F then slide it in, mating up the drive and shift shafts. Each time I bolt it up then use the slide rail to try to change the gears it will go to F & N all the way to the rear, it will not engage R. Is there a trick here I'm missing?

do what you're doing but put the lu in reverse before you install i've never seen one yet that wasn't more position sensitive to reverse than forward just a thought
