I have a 1972-65 evinrude. Runs great but it has electric shift. Bottom oil when drained is dirty and it stinks after 4 days of running. They tell me water is getting in and it needs to be replaced. Is it worth it or should I be looking for a new motor. I can buy a lower end for $350 they tell me it works good. But who knows. Plus another $250 to but it on. Not sure what to do. Any ideas. Thanks alot.

The oil stinks because it has been hot, which suggests a gear, or bearing problem. This is kind of a hard call. You could end up with a lot of money in that old engine. Buying a used hydro-electric could be a real gamble. Hopefully you could make one good case from the two, but you won't know that until they are apart.
