Model J6RCDE 1980's??
I was given this Johnson after it took a dip in the lake. I was told that if I could get it started I could use it. Engine was dried off and the spark plugs removed. I have tried new plugs and WD-40 to start it, but no luck.plug smelled like gas. I did not see any spark from the plug. I played around with the kill switch with no luck. any other ideas??
THanks in advance.
PS. THis forum has been a lifesaver for me many times. Keep up the great work. :)

Scot, I think you'll have better luck posting this question under the Johnson/Evinrude forum... :)

That's an '86, Scott.

Why in the world did you post your question in I/Os and Inboards?

Moving to Outboard Non-Repair.

Try spraying a little fuel mix directly into the cylinders. The sooner you get that motor running, the less damage. You probably have water in the carbs.

Scott.

Go to FAQ and do "Outboard wont start".

I could be way off, but if it was dunked all the electronics could have been damaged. Check all points, coils and such. Cracked coils usually mean they need to be replaced. Just a thought, check the plug wires also.

Re: 6hp Johnson - No spark

just to be pedantic, there are no electronics in these motors Thompy, a few ELECTRICS, but no electronics. sorry, couldn't help myself :p

Um, yeah, no spark, check your points and condesors, check coils too, but imersion usually won't kill them. As JB said do the FAQ checklist, it's a cakewalk.

Re: 6hp Johnson - No spark

Well, actually guys, there ARE electronics on a 1986 Johnson 6hp - it's a CD ignition motor so there are no points or condensors to worry about.

The new formulation for WD-40 will not start a dried motor - it's not as volatile as the old version and will just wet the plugs.

Pull the carb - drain any water out of it. Before replacing the carb, hook up a fuel line from a tank of clean mixed fuel and prime it through to rid the fuel pump and lines in the motor of any water. Replace the carb. Pull the plugs, ground the wires and pull the motor over to clear the cylinders of any water. This can be done with the motor laying on its back. Right the motor, replace the plugs and place back on the boat, or in a test tank/barrel. Attempt to start. Do not use QuikStart or any type of ether starting fluid - if it's going to start it will start on gas....

- Scott

Re: 6hp Johnson - No spark

:) sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, Too many problems with to many boats, so little time :)
Good details Chinewalker! Tried it, no water in the engine to be found. But still wouldn't start. Any advice on detecting spark or trouble shooting that on this type of engine? I have tried the usual method of looking for spark and have not seen anything. I disconnected the shut off and it did not seem to make any difference.
Thanks again in advance.

You need to have all connectors apart and clean the pins. Start with the wires that leaves under the stator, to the powerpack. How long ago is it took a swim??

Re: 6hp Johnson - No spark

Anyone else on this. Still trying to figure out how to test the ignition system to see why there is no spark. All connections are clean and have continuity. Can I check a connection using a Fluke meter to tell me what the problem is?

Re: 6hp Johnson - No spark

disconnect the ground wire from stop button check spark if it now sparks stop switch is the answer if not remove ground from power pack clean both wire and block reattach and test again still no spark test charge coil resistance around 600 ohms
(brown and brown/yellow) check sensor coil resistance (white/black and black white) around 60 ohms i think can't remember also check each wire to ground should be no continuity
if they are ok may be power pack you need a peak reading volt meter to test pack is cheaper only other thing i can think of is a shearded flywheel key
good luck
