65 merc starter problem

when i tern the key all I get is a clicking noise. solinoid? if I use a screwdriver to cross the wires then the starter engages

Myfin,<br /><br />Yep, sounds like a bad solenoid, or bad connections to the solenoid. <br /><br />Good luck.
