Hey guys, I was out for a cruise last night and I started having some issues with the engine coming out of drive. at first it popped out and then would go back into drive but after a few minutes it would not stay in drive .
I have tried it with the cable off and holding the shift lever down . lower unit oil and seals are all good.
any suggestions?
Thanx alot guys

A classic problem. The clutch dog is worn out, and maybe the forward gear also. If you don't fix it, eventually it will beat the shift linkage to death too. Or, sometimes worn shift linkage leads to the dog wear. Hey, the motor is nearly 50 years old.

It's so common, there are lots of threads here on the subject.

Thnk you FR , I just found this thread "1965 johnson super seahorse 33 hp Not staying in gear i dont think its the drive dogs " it seems to have most of the info I need. Is this an expensive part do you know ? I am in Canada and the shipping kills me from the states.

You may be able to find a new one on Ebay or go to AOMCI.org website and post a free want-ad. the dog could run anywhere from $35 to $100+. The gear will be even more expensive.

Thnx guys, I took the whole thing apart and it all looked mint in the lower unit , I checked the brass shift rod conector and it had a little play in it and was stripped . I replaced it and it seems to have fixed the problem . D'OH

Are you saying you have run it since and it is ok? Well, I'm happy for you, but not optomistic. We'll see.
