hi,
wondering if I can get some advise. My 63' 75h evinrude has been a great motor original to my Thompson runabout (i have had it 25 years) but this season it has been weeping gas and oil. There is a bit of water in the lower unit and it is using a lot of fuel. Runs and starts very well as I am carefull about winterising it. Any advise as to what to try before next year rolls around?
thanks

Well, you will have to deal with that water intrusion or change the oil often. Water in there in not a good thing.

As for using a lot of fuel, and gas/oil/fuel dripping out, so what else is new? They all do that. In fact, they dump some fuel on purpose. Nobody worried about that back in those days.

thanks for the reply. I do change the gear oil every year. The fuel consumption has gotten worse and it does dump more oil/fuel into the water than it used too. It bothers me to be putting it in the lake. Anything I can do to tighten that up?

If it is not running properly, it will dump fuel. You can start with simply adjusting the carburetor. Does it have as much power as it used to? If not, it might be running on 3 cylinders. You could also have a holed fuel pump diaphragm. That will dump fuel like crazy, depending on the size of the hole.

AS F_R said they did that on purpose. The therory was the hot exhaust gases would burn up the excess fuel from the recuirt system but it never seemed to work. The only thing I could suggest is keep the mtr properly tuned, the idle motor temp is high enough and your carb is not flooding over at times.
