installing new oem waterpump kit on my 1981 johnson 60hp.old impeller has a metal pin type woodruff key and the impellar has a slot into which it fits.the new kit has a white plastic wedge shape woodruff key with a corresponding impression in the new impellar. with this new set up when the drive shaft is rotated clockwise the impeller does not "lock" against the shaft,it turns on the shaft freely the slightest resistance stops the impeller.when the shaft is rotated counterclockwise the impeller "locks" and rotates with the shaft? was the old impeller oem or aftermarket? am i installing the wedge woodruff key wrong. i have tried every way i can think of.any help would be appreciated

no each key is specific to that impeller. the kit is oem got it from the local johnson dealer.when the plastic key is in place in the impeller it makes the hole perfectly round, where as the shaft has a flatspot?

fyi,did some searching and found that the plastic "half-moon" key as it is called is used on 1989 60 hp and larger engines.so looks like i received the wrong part. thanks

you may simply have a replacement lu from a newer motor, that the dealer did not realize.
