Hi,
I am looking at a 60 hp 4-stroke, EFI that won't stay running.
Starts fine, idles well, take it out and throttle up and it will die within a minute. Squeeze the ball, start it, repeat... Seems like it is fuel starvation.
If it were carbureted, we'd consider a stuck needle valve and float where the bowl is running out and cannot be refilled
Would we get this same symptom from the needle valve and float inside the vapor separator?
Thanks,
J

What is the fuel pressure on the rail?

Designs vary, but you typically have a low pressure fuel pump, a VST (satisfy EPA) and a high pressure fuel pump to generate pressure in the rail.

Typically have float controls in either the VST or the high pressure pump housing.

Odds are you have a bad fuel pump or plugged filter

Indeed.
Pulled the fuel pump exit line and got nothing. Opened the fuel pump and wondered how it even worked. Check valve not seated, no rubber bullet holding it in place, diaphragms decomposed. A complete mess.
Replaced fuel pump. Great fuel flow from exit. Fuel also exits the Schrader valve on the vapor separator.
Started and ran for about 2 minutes and stalled. Thought we might be chasing air bubbles out. Efforts to restart are failing. I cannot tell if it is starving or flooding. Pumping the squeeze ball doesn't seem to help and the starter just cranks and cranks.
I've let it sit overnight and will try a cold start this morning. I did see in the parts list a second fuel "under a protective cover" filter before the VST. I'll go look for that.
I am not familiar with pressure measurements in the rail. I shall look up a video.
Thank you,
J
p.s., what does the VST do?
