I have a 1974 6 hp Evinrude that I just checked in a tub of water while getting it ready for the summer It ran but no water came from the "pee Hole" I made sure that there was enough water in the tub but still nothing. I only let the motor run 20 seconds at a time so not to let it get damaged from heat. Any suggestions? Do I have to start taking things apart or is there another option. Thanks Josh

Hi Josh....

Was the water level above the match line between the lower unit and mid section? These pump will not "draw" water and have to be submerged to work. The 74's as I recall didn't have "pee" holes. On the rear of the midsection is a port that water will spit out of once the thermostat has opened.

My 6hp 1965 Seahorse does NOT have a pee hole, but rather a "spit hole" like Jim was talking about. It is about the diameter of my little finger, pointed down and about midway up the midsection.

Having said that, how warm should this water comming from the hole feel? I can barely hold my hand in it, but it feels extreamly hot for the amount of cold lake water that is circulating through it.

Stone

Hi Stone.

The water you are feeling is coming from the exhaust so it's going to feel warm or hot. If you think your engine is overheating, try this. With the engine at idle, the flat place just in front of the head (on top) should be about 140 to 145 degrees. You can put your fingers on it and not jerk them away. But it will get uncomfortable after a few seconds.

This is all great help thank you! How long can I run the motor while waiting for the thermostat to open and spit hole to start spitting before any damage is done? Thanks.

If the engine gets hot and dosen't appear to be doing anything about it, ie, tstat opening and allowing cooling flow, shut it down.
