-50 Pink RV Anti-freeze

I winterized my boat last night. Started it up with the muffs on and let it run until good and hot, then I switched the hose off and the bucket of anti-freeze on with the Y on connected to the muffs. I ran it until 6 gallons has run through it and there was pink on the ground. Near the end of the run I fogged it out. This is a mercruiser 260 V8. After I was done I looked one of the empty bottles of RV antifreeze and it said do not use for engine anti-freeze or coolant. Do you think I am OK with this stuff?

tommays,
No, I am just learning long line backwards. I know several good ski buddies who do backwards toe holds, though. Why do you ask?

Paul

The pink stuff will probibly be ok but i think the pink stuff is for water holding tanks is it not?
my concern would be does it have any anti-rusting additives?

what made you chose RV antifreeze and not automotive antifreeze?

iam thinking of useing antifreeze on my 302ci ford motor instead of removeing all the plugs also.

has anyone else had experance on doing this?

russman

Re: -50 Pink RV Anti-freeze

I use the proprylene glycol af (no tox) that has corrosion inhibitors in it for winter storage. It costs more that the pink stuff but I think it is worth it. Do not use ethylene glycol (car stuff) in your boat motor unless you can drain it out without getting it all over the ground or even worse in the water. Bad for fish, pets, etc.

For what it's worth, that "no tox" stuff is kind of a sham. From what I've read, it's about 1/2 as toxic as the regular ethylene glycol. That means it will now take TWO tablespoons (instead of one) to kill the local wildlife and half a cup to kill the neighbor's kid. Yes, it's better but it's still a very poisonous substance. Apparently it doesn't taste as sweet, which is a plus but that won't help the fish if you pour it down the drain.

Re: -50 Pink RV Anti-freeze

If it says not for use as engine coolant/antifreeze why would you use it? It does take up space and not freeze until -50, but has no corrosion inhibitors.

it is the never ending battel of people not understanding how toxic things travel everywere

in the extreme look at mercury or PCB which were at one time spiled like candy but still stay in the food chain or look at something like BTME or whatever that safe gas adative was that should have never caused a problem but is fouling water all over the USA

to me the real point is that a drained engine cannot freeze and nothing is going to undue all the raw water that has gone through your motor after the fact its allready rusted and scaled so your adding things that do not extend the life of the motor and end up in the water no mater how carefull you are

tommays

AMSOIL Antifreeze and Engine Coolant meets the long-recognized need for a universal coolant fluid, satisfactory for passenger automobiles, light-duty trucks, recreational vehicles of all sizes, and diesel-powered semi-truck rigs operating in all climates - from sub-zero winter conditions to desert heat. It also serves as an excellent winter-storage antifreeze for inboard boat motors and RV plumbing systems, and can be used to winterize vacant cabins and summer homes in frigid climates.
http://www.cathken.com/coolant.html

There are many others NON TOXIC products on the market that serve both the RV and Marine industry equally and they all have corrosion and rust inhibitors.......

http://www.ecotech-coolants.com/display.cfm?p=74502AEC-86F2-4D07-BD2AD088EBE92D39

http://www.lfburgess.com/winter_antifreeze.htm

http://www.southwinltd.com/Northwin/nontoxic.htm

Re: -50 Pink RV Anti-freeze
What are ethylene glycol and propylene glycol?
Both ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are clear, colorless, slightly syrupy liquids at room temperature. Either compound may exist in air in the vapor form, although propylene glycol must be heated or briskly shaken to produce a vapor. Ethylene glycol is odorless but has a sweet taste. Propylene glycol is practically odorless and .

Both compounds are used to make antifreeze and de-icing solutions for cars, airplanes, and boats; to make polyester compounds; and as solvents in the paint and plastics industries. Ethylene glycol is also an ingredient in photographic developing solutions, hydraulic brake fluids and in inks used in stamp pads, ballpoint pens, and print shops.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified propylene glycol as an additive that is "generally recognized as safe" for use in food. It is used to absorb extra water and maintain moisture in certain medicines, cosmetics, or food products. It is a solvent for food colors and flavors.

Propylene glycol is also used to create artificial smoke or fog used in fire-fighting training and in theatrical productions.

How can ethylene glycol and propylene glycol affect my health?
Eating or drinking very large amounts of ethylene glycol can result in death, while large amounts can result in nausea, convulsions, slurred speech, disorientation, and heart and kidney problems.

Female animals that ate large amounts of ethylene glycol had babies with birth defects, while male animals had reduced sperm counts. However, these effects were seen at very high levels and would not be expected in people exposed to lower levels at hazardous waste sites.

Ethylene glycol affects the body's chemistry by increasing the amount of acid, resulting in metabolic problems. Similar to ethylene glycol, propylene glycol increases the amount of acid in the body. However, larger amounts of propylene glycol are needed to cause this effect.
Re: -50 Pink RV Anti-freeze

Maybe I will just drain the block and manifolds just to be safe. With running anti-freeze through it and draining there should be much chance of a problem.

Re: -50 Pink RV Anti-freeze

Do you let the stuff just pour down the drains or do you catch it in something as its flushing? If you catch it where do you dispose of it?

Re: -50 Pink RV Anti-freeze

The pink rv stuff should be safe to dump down a drain since it is edible(this is a guess on the rv stuff). The car type should be collected and taken to a recycling facility. Check with your local car repair shops and car dealerships they may be able to send you in the right direction on proper disposal facilities.

DougV>
