Have a Mercury 500-50 HP,Thunderbolt Ignition,Serial #-2742088,its black with 4 chrome stripes and 2 red stripes around the middle,the removable cover on end is chrome and black that sez-Thunderbolt Ignition,and below that it sez Mercury in white and has red and black trim.Could someone tell me what year this motor is and also what is the compression supossed to be,i checked it cold and it is from 110 to 118,just got it,never put it in the water yet,starts instanly and runs like a dream. Thanks. This is a goooood forum.

I found out its a 1970 model but i couldnt find anything on what the compression specs should be,is 110 t0 118 good or bad.

Welcome to Iboats!<br />My 1975 Merc 50 is 135 all around. They all tend to be around 115-140. 110 to 118 isn't great but it's not bad for a motor of that age. Your tester could be leaky too, causeing low readings. Basically what you're looking for in a compression check is that they're all in the same sorta range. like if you had 110,110,80,110 you'd have a problem.<br />Eric
