I recently purchased a pontoon with a 50 hp force motor(1993). I thought that there should be a steady stream of water out the two ports but the dealer doesn't thinks so on this particular model. The first time I put the pontoon in the water was only for about 10 minutes and I forgot to check the water flow threw the ports, but the dealer said he had resealed the lower unit and had checked the impellar and it was good. the next day I put the pontoon back in the water and went for about 15 minutes and shut the engine down and everything was okay, except I still failed to check the ports for water flow. I started the engine again to move to a different location and went about 5 minutes and the heat warning horn went off, I emmidiately looked to see if water was coming out of the ports and all I sent was steam and alittle spitting. I then shut the engine down and discovered a lot of sea weed had wrapped arround the lower end. After removing this I let the engine cool down and restarted the engine and it seemed to run fine withe exception of only steam and alittle water spitting from the two ports. Is this normal for this motor? The dealer has since replaced the thermostat and ordered a new impellar but he says this one looks fine, but I still only get exhaust and alittle water spitting out the ports. I have run the engine full throttle for an hour and no problems besides the lack of a good stream of water from the ports.

The impeller is fine. As long as you have a spray (like, you told the motor a good joke while it had a mouth full of sea water).....Phphphphphp!! Type spray,it's fine.

What should I expect to see out of these ports at idle? Thanks for your help!

You should see a slight spitting/exhaust and even steam. These are not telltale streams like on other outboards. They are exhaust relief holes. The spit volume will increase with RPM..

And that's why some many Force outboards have died prematurely: no telltale hole!
