I just bought a 1990 Bayliner with 1990 50 HP Force Outboard. The guy claimed no problems except maybe to clean fuel filter screen. He ran it in a barrel for me and not on the river since trailer was unregistered. He said the gas was brand new. We added more and mixed correctly 50:1.

Got the boat home and noticed it wouldn't go faster than maybe 10 mph. We noticed fuel leaking out side of engine and found melted fuel hose that came from fuel pump. Valve on fuel pump was also melted. We replaced the melted part of the pump (spacer) and the diapraghm and gaskets on the pump and the hose.

Then we noted no water was coming out of engine and while replacing water pump we scratched the small inner gaskets on the new waterpump body. We decided to replace the new impeller but used the old waterpump body since we bought the only one the parts dept. had on their shelf.

Now the boat overheats at an idle and an alarm comes on but it pumps fine when we give it throttle. It goes up to about 1/3 throttle then coughs/shakes until you push throttle to full throttle, but even at full throttle, the power it gives is equal to having the arm at 1/3 throttle.

Oh yeah, and the fun part, sometimes it gets haunted and chooses to go 'forward' in reverse and 'reverse' in forward!!

Besides that problem, the thing is still not getting full power so we replaced the "gapless" plugs with "gappable" plugs.

Didn't help so we replaced a coil and spark plug wire because we noticed the thing was running on one cylinder. It seemed to help a little so we adjusted the timing (was 31 we changed to 28.) Didn't help.

My uncle came on board and fiddled with the throttle cables, linkage arms to carberator and the idle screws, etc. He said there wasn't enough oxygen/air getting into the carberator to burn the gas. He manually pulled something on the carb and was able to bring the boat up to a faster speed but not by using the throttle arm itself. I tried carb cleaner. I have the manual.

I don't know what else to do and the service shops are booked up for three weeks!!!!!!!

Help us!!! Please!!

Thanks,
LE

For the overheat problem;
Try replacing the T-stat with a new one.
Check the timing for the poor performance.
It sounds like the timing is not advancing properly. If the Fuel pump hose has melted, what condition is the main hose in?
Also, consider replacing the chrysler-type fitting with merc type. The chrysler type give you a fit at night, when trying to switch tanks, and are hard to seat.

Check the vents on the tanks, making sure they are operating.
Also, does the primer bulb get hard when pumped? If not, is fuel exiting the carb when the primer bulb is pumped?

On the forward/reverse ghost, remove the threaded connector a the shift shaft, and see if there is undue play. There is play iether above (control cable/shift linkage),or below in the lower unit.
Once you find what is loose, and correct it, the ghost shall haunt you no more.
