I have a Johnson 4hp model 4W71D s/n3358778 1971 is there a pee outlet on this motor. The motor starts and runs but I see no water coming out, Also have a Evinrude light twin model 3302 S (not sure of the S) s/n B7384 I believe it to be a 1963 (correct??) Same problem? Is J6C the right plugs for these motors. Bought some Champion JC6 plugs are these the same? Gas mix 24/1 correct? Thanks

The water indicator on both motors is the same: There should be a spray of water out the small exhasut relief holes about half way down the shaft.

Yep, 3302 is a 1963

Fuel mix is 24:1 on the '63 and 50:1 on the '71, but 24:1 won't hurt it.

Correct plugs are J6C. The other one is shorter for chansaws, but will work.

As FR says J6C are the correct plugs (gapped at 0.030") for both engines

I don't know what a JC6 is I cannot find it listed. Perhaps you have misread it. There are CJ6 plugs listed. Dont know what they are for but have the same reach as the J6C

Actually, you should 24:1 on that 4hp too. There aren't any needle bearings in it, therefore it is a friction type motor.

The spark plugs are a J6C, but they have a new number now and I can't recall what that is. I think it's nuts that Champion renames their product inventory and this is the second time on these. They started out as a J6J, but those were a little bit shorter in length.

Yeah, my brain froze up, I had CJ6 in mind when I said chainsaw. Don't know what the other one is. J6J (now obsolete) was a true two-stroke plug. The side electrode only extended half way across the center electrode to help prevent gap bridging and also to present a sharp edge for the spark to jump to (takes less voltage to arc to a sharp edge).

Re: 4hp & 3hp water pump questions

I am inclined to recommend Champion J4C (.030) for both of those engines unless they are used for extended periods of idling. If any fouling is experienced I would regap them to .035 or .040. The J6C will work okay and was recommended after years of the J4C (J4J) being the spec plug.

The original 1964 Johnson Service Manual lists J4J (now J4C) for the '63 engine.

Thanks for all the help. I think you are right about the shorter plug. I remember working on a outboard that I had to get a shorter plugs for (longer one won't fit under hood) but I thought it was a different number. Thanks
