First post, but have learned a lot from reading through old ones, thanks to the pros.
Have an 87 Stingray with a 470. Installed a pertronix with a 1.5 ohm coil, resistor wire still in place and tapped 12 v from the choke for the ignitor II. Boat ran beautifully last summer but I discovered that I was not getting charge to the batteries. Turns out the voltage regulator was fried likely before I got it as I recall the previous owner mentioned he kept spare batteries on board in case his cranking battery died. Boat ran great but depleted battery so I recharged after every run and had spares. So this season did an alternator conversion (breezeworks), tested and had charging voltage, all good. Took the boat to the river to try it out under load and ran for about 45 min before I lost power and shut down. Was worried that we had overheated as everything under the doghouse was hot, (which turned out to be another issue now fixed) but touched the coil and alternator and they seemed hotter than they should be. When I got the boat home I did some trouble shooting and found that I had no spark, further investigation revealed the coil burned out, I put the old coil back in (also 1.5 ohm) and it started right up. Took the Alt. to a tech and he agreed that it was running a little warm so he pulled it apart and said the stator windings were bad and also replaced the regulator and set it up as a single wire. So hopefully that makes it run cooler.
I then got on the horn to pertronix and the tech told me I had the wrong coil, needed the 3 ohm coil and no resister wire. So, got that and installed and took the boat out again, ran perfect for an hour or so, also verified the other issue with heat mentioned above temp held steady at 180, but the coil still seemed hot. Last week on vacation put the boat in water ripped around the lake for 1/2 hour or so and then docked until the next day. Went out for about a 1/2 hour run and then stopped to rundown trolling motor operation with my son. Started back up to head back and within 5 min. lost power and shut down. I had my meter in the boat and tested the coil primary - no reading, and secondary reading on the negative side only. Had the old coil as well and swapped it and replaced the resistance wire which was taped off. Boat started right up and we got back. So I begin to think I'm getting battery voltage at the coil but can't test when running (crappy meter) - like I said boat ran great last summer with no charging system, so I removed the alt. belt and ran in the bay for about 2 hrs no problem. Checked the battery and it was 12.7 v, so ran again the next day and kept an eye on the volt meter, battery got down to about 12.4, switched to battery 2 and charged both that night and ran next day no problems. Coil was warm but not hot like the previous times.
So i guess I'm looking for suggestions on what could cause the coil to burnout? The main change is addition of the alt. I tested voltage on + side of coil with key on and its about 11.6 and around 8 on - side.
Anyone have similar problems with coils? Sorry for the long post and short question but it's all in the details.
