430B - How to hookup a tach for timing

Hello

The last time I used a tach (dwell/tach) was when I had a Pinto in the 1980's (yes, I admit I had a Pinto).

I have to do the timing and I understand the instructions, but have no idea how to hook a tach up to get the correct rpm's. Also, the only thing I have that resembles a tach is the dwell/tach I mentioned above, which was for cars.

I guess I need to buy a tach too.

Can someone explain how to hook one up and perhaps recommend one to buy?

Thanks a lot . . . . Brian

Unless someone changed your distributor, you don't have points, it's the Prestolite BID electonic ignition.
No points, no dwell.
Your helm tach should work fine for setting the timing with a timing light.

Re: 430B - How to hookup a tach for timing

Hi Don

Thanks for replying.

I have the Delco Voyager system.

I got a complete replacement kit from Michigan Motorz and replaced the entire system.
(Distributor, electronic module, rotor, cap, coil, wires and plugs are all new).

I was able to put the new distributor in, in roughly the same position as the old one, so the engine starts and runs.

The tach on the boat is not working right. It varies even when the engine speed is steady and then shows 2000 rpm at idle. Sometimes it shows 750 at idle though. I suppose I should fix this, but was not looking for another project just yet and I have no experience with tachs (yet).

Is there any other way to hook a tach up?

Also, the timing "teeth" near the pulley have no marks on them (or maybe my eye-sight is just really bad). Any idea how I know which tooth is Zero degrees, which is what the instructions say it should be set at?

I really do appreciate your help.

Re: 430B - How to hookup a tach for timing

Thanks Don

I have one remaining question. The Volvo manual states the timing should be 0? BTDC at 750 r/min, which I know I shouldn't question. But, I have seen other specs that just makes me wonder. One source states 2 degrees BTDC at 500 rpm and the link you sent me (which is for the GL engine, not a 430B) states 18 degrees BTDC at 600 rpm.

Can you confirm that 0? BTDC at 750 r/min is correct?

Thanks . . . Brian

No, I can't confirm, it is not 0? What manual (manual number will be best) are you looking at?

You need connector #885163 to set the Delco distributor in base mode.
When the engine is warm and running, you connect the connector to +12V, and set
ignition to 0 at 750rpm.

He doesn't have the Delco EST distributor. Even if he did it wouldn't set at 0 on a V6.......

Re: 430B - How to hookup a tach for timing

Hi

Thanks for all the replies.

Buying a new timing light with a tach is a great idea.

I have the connector (shunt?) and used it last night to set the timing.
I followed the instructions and only connected it after the engine was
running. I used 0 degrees at what I guessed was 750rpms. For the moment,
a guess will have to do since I have to get it in the water.

Sorry, I should have mentioned - the manual I am using says this on the cover page:
Workshop Manual C 2(0) AQ205, 430, 431, 432, 434

Thanks again - the help has been wonderful.

So when the Delco Voyager distributor is in base mode, what should the ignition on a V6 be set to?
Asking because I really don't know and would like to find out, as I have the same distributor on a V6 myself.

Re: 430B - How to hookup a tach for timing

I have the Delco Voyager and I thought I had the correct manual.

The instructions Don linked me to, is my distributor.

If 0 at 750 is not correct, does anyone know what is?

I appreciate the help.

I went back an looked an missed the one post I was looking for, and that is where you had the EST from Mich. Motoz.
Sorry guys, my fault for the wrong info.

Yes, you so have the same as the 432, and using the timing shunt you will set the timing a 0?. But that has nothing to do with what it runs at, it's just used for setting the initial timing.
