Re: 4.3GL, starts and dies instantly
So check this out, 12 volts key on at ignition switch and coil. This problem has proven to be intermitent, thought I had it solved, but what I did previously to fix the problem had only been a matter of coincidence.
When you go key on, you should hear a beep, I am assuming the warning system telling you that the engine is not making any oil pressure, just like the solid tone in a Mercruiser. Like a 'cruiser it starts making oil pressure and so long as the engine is not hot (or the drive lube monitor is not empty in case of a 'cruiser) the tone shuts up.
Some times I would here a beep and sometimes not. I started checking all the ignition 12 volt (purple wire) circuits I could find. There is a purple wire that runs to the alternator, I am assuming to turn the alternator on. With the key on, I check it with my power probe and have 0.09 volts, I apply power to the pole that the wire is attached to and I get my warning tone indicating that the circuit is complete and the engine should fire. Instead of running a jumper so I could crank the boat to see if it fired, I took a remote start switch and ran one end to the hot side of a circuit breaker on the engine and the other end to the pole on the alternator, press the button on the remote start switch and turn the ignition key and the motor fires and stays running. I let it run for about 20 seconds and let go of the start button, engine dies suddenly, depress the button quickly and continues to run.
I am able to turn the problem on and off. The shade tree in me says to splice into the wire for the coil and run a leg from that wire which does not seem to have a continuity problem to the alternator being that I am pretty sure I just have a bad section of harness. I dont speak volvo well and am not familiar with the finer points of their electrical systems and harnesses, but I cant see any harm fixing the problem this way.
Any opinions?
