Long story short removed inlet manifold to fix oil leak & cleaned injectors whilst it was out. Had a few issues getting distributor in correct alignment. Engine wouldn't start but when I put some fuel in venturi it ran for a few seconds then stopped. Realised I hadn't bled fuel rail which I did & it released some air. Now I can't get it to start even with 'start you bastard'. I then noticed IAC muffler was missing & using camera I can see it has been ingested into number 1 cyl. & appears to be stopping one of the valves from closing. Judging by vapour coming out of venturi it must be inlet valve. See pic. I will go back out tomorrow with a pair of tweezers & see if I can pull it out. I remember my mechanic telling me it was common for these to be sucked into engine but not that this could happen. Any thoughts on how to get it out if tweezers fail?1000027034.jpg

What year?.. Serial number?
If you're sort of able to reach it, maybe a good shop vacuum will bring it back out... It's always been figured to be the iac muffler will work itself out.... This mentioned, seems somewhat doubtful this should be keeping the engine from fully starting but stranger things do happen all the time.

Be sure the firing order is in the correct order.

If the engine is a 2003+ model year, it is essential that the distributor is phased in correctly as it can be pretty challenging to get just right on the HVS type distributor system.

^ if so, see the last few pages for a type of guide for some reassurance,

Thanks for reply & apologies for not responding earlier. Yes got the filter out. Non starting had me baffled. I thought try something different so I disconnected all of the injector electrical connectors & it fired up albeit very roughly. After it stopped I reconnected connectors & it started ok & was a bit lumpy. After about 60 seconds it was idling perfectly! I now have overheating at idle problem now but I will do separate post for that.
