Well start by checking the seawater pump.On a Volvo they are driven right off the crank or via a belt right next to the crank.

Re: 350 CHEVY OVER HEAT

Hi Bolo, **** is probably right on this one. When people sell their boats while on the trailer, they will sometimes start the engine without the water hose hooked to them. When this happens, the rubber impeller in your raw water pump will melt and fall apart in SECONDS. You just getting the boat suggests to me that this is what has possibly occured. Once you get the problem repaired, watch for white/blueish smoke in your exhaust. If it smokes, you may have overheated the piston rings causing them to loose their temper. This will cause low/poor compression. End result----REBUILD---- It is not a good sign when your engine gets so hot, it shuts down. This is where serious damage occurs. Good Luck..

TWO.. One is the sea water or raw water pump driven off the crank or by a belt.. The second is the circulating pump which is the same as a water pump on a car or truck..The circulating pump moves the coolant(antifreeze) through the engine and the heat exchanger(The big bottle looking thing)... The raw water pump moves sea water through the heat exchanger to cool the antifreeze.. Think of the heat exchanger as a radiator and the sea water as the air moving through the radiator.. Same effect. :)

Bolo, have you checked the heat exchanger and hoses for clogs? That should not be overlooked. If you haven't checked that, do it now before rebuilding the engine, the heat exchanger might just be full of seaweed or so, cleaning it NEVER harms.

Hope that is your only problem.
Lou

Re: 350 CHEVY OVER HEAT

Every closed cooling system is pressurized (water expands with rising temperature) and when he took the cork off, sure it started flowing over. That's ok.

As for the heads, it's better to check the whole cooling system before pulling the engine and filling pockets of a mechanic who doesn't want anything but your money. Trust your skills, try to find the cause of overheating yourself and in the worst case, you can always pull the heads anyway.

Keep us posted on your progress
Lou

Re: 350 CHEVY OVER HEAT

Hi Bolo, How hot does your exhaust manifolds get? If they get so hot that you cant't touch them, I would say you have a water circulation problem with your raw water intake. With the Anti-freeze boiling, it is not getting chilled with the raw water. Your raw water pump should be on the end of the crankshaft, or if it is an early model, it will be on a bracket off to the side of crankshaft with a belt driving it. Check to make sure that you have a belt on it and that it does turn. Does water come out with the exhaust when it is running? If not, you DO have a problem with your raw water coming in and going through your heat exchanger. The white smoke could be steam, but with the loss of power tell me that it may be too late. Rings are possibly shot from getting too hot. Get your raw water flowing, change your oil, and hope like heck the motors all right!
