Out of water, using muffs, runs & operates great, stays in gear. In water jumps in & out of gear, loses power. Sounds like striking a sunken object. Any suggestions as to possible problem

------------------

Yo, Robdro. Probably shift linkage adjustment. That is easy to fix. The racket is the dog clutch popping in and out. On the flushing unit there is no load on the prop and gearbox to nudge it out. You didn't say so, but I am assuming this only happens in FORWARD.

Good luck.
JB

I know just what the problem is. I have fixed several of these. The trouble is the dogs in the forward gear are worn from shifting into forward while the motor is reving to high or from shifting from reverse to forward to fast. It almost never happens in reverse because no one shifts into reverse with the motor reving to high. The fix is simple. Take the lower unit apart you will most likely need a new seal between the 2 halfs and of course the proper lower unit grease. Once you have the unit apart take the gears and shaft out of course you should have the prop off. Inspect the forward gear inside that is where the 2 dogs are. if the edges are worn there is your problem. As for parts the gears are the same however each has a different part number because one comes as the gear alone and the othere has a bushing pressed in it. Press the bushing out of the gear and press it into the oppssite gear. Than just swap gears when putting the unit back together. Unless the slider has been worn too you should have your problem fixed. Also you shouldn't have a problem with reverse jumping out unless you apply to much power while in reverse. Pay attention to the way everything comes apart so you shouldn't have a problem putting it together and remember to refill the lower unit with grease. Good Luck

Welcome to iboats!

The OP hasn't posted on iboats in over eleven years , so I don't think he's going to see your information.

It's also against forum rules to dredge up old threads.

Wow. How does one find an 11 year old thread anyway? And the guy that brought it back to life has only 2 posts in 5 years......
